Pope Francis names Cardinal Cupich a member of Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship

Pope Francis on Wednesday named Cardinal Blase Cupich as a member of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

The archbishop of Chicago’s appointment was announced by the Holy See press office on June 1.

In 2021, Cupich welcomed the publication of the motu proprioTraditionis custodes, restricting celebrations of the Traditional Latin Mass.

Other churchmen named as members of the congregation include the Irish-American Cardinal Kevin Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, the Family, and Life, and the Bronx-born Archbishop Augustine Di Noia, adjunct secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Di Noia also welcomed the publication of Traditionis custodes, saying in a 2021 interview with the Catholic News Service that “the TLM (Traditional Latin Mass) movement has hijacked the initiatives of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI to its own ends.”

Cardinal Blase Joseph Cupich, Metropolitan Archbishop of Chicago, United States of America, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S.A., on March 19th, 1949. After attending the customary primary and secondary schools, he attended the "College of St. Thomas" inSt. Paul, Minnesota, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1971. From 1971 to 1975 he was student at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, and studied theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. In 1979 he obtained a licentiate and in 1987 a Doctorate in sacramental theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

He was ordained a priest on August 16th, 1975 for the archdiocese of Omaha.

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich

Cardinal Blase Joseph Cupich was born on March 19, 1949, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Blase and Mary (Mayhan) Cupich.  He is one of nine children, with five sisters and three brothers.

Cardinal Cupich was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Omaha on August 16, 1975.  He was pastor of two parishes in Omaha. He was appointed Bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota by Pope John Paul II on July 7, 1998, and was ordained and installed on September 21, 1998. He was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as the sixth Bishop of Spokane, Washington on June 30, 2010, and installed on September 3, 2010.  Cardinal Cupich was appointed Archbishop of Chicago by Pope Francis on September 20, 2014 and installed as the ninth Archbishop of Chicago on November 18, 2014.

On October 9, 2016, Pope Francis named him a Cardinal and he was elevated to the College of Cardinals in a consistory on November 19, 2016, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
