Let’s go back to the very beginning. You grew up in Fresno, California, but you were actually born in Berlin, Germany. How old were you when you moved?
Audra McDonald: We left Berlin when I was I about eight weeks old. My mother and I went to Lawrenceville, Virginia, which is her hometown, and then my dad went off to Vietnam. Once he finished his tour of duty in Vietnam, we moved to Fresno, which is where he’s from. I think I was nine months old. My parents made the trip across country in a dark green Volkswagen station wagon.
Was there a musical tradition in your family? Were other members musical?
Audra McDonald: My family’s very musical. My grandmother, my maternal grandmother, was a music major in — I guess it would have been the ’30s in Mississippi — went to college, and she was a piano teacher after that. My mother played the piano as a result. And then on my dad’s side, his mother was a piano teacher and the organist at their church, and all of his sisters sang. My dad played. Audra Ann McDonald[1] (born July 3, 1970)[2] is an American singer and actress. Primarily known for her work on the Broadway stage, she has won six Tony Awards, more performance wins than any other actor, and is the only person to win in all four acting categories.[note 1] In addition to her six Tony Awards she has received numerous accolades including two Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award. She was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 2016 from President Barack Obama, and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2017.[3]

She played Professor Carla Bonatelle in the television seriesThe Bedford Diaries, Dr. Naomi Bennett in Private Practice, and Jackie Brock in Mister Sterling. She was nominated for Emmy Awards for playing Susie Monahan in the TV movie Wit and Ruth Younger in the TV movie A Raisin in the Sun. She won an Emmy in 2015 for her part as Lucy in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a musical that was filmed for Live From Lincoln Center. She was also in the Live From Lincoln Center filmed musical Passion as Clara and played Grace Farrell in the TV movie Annie and Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music Live!. Her show Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill.
