Michael Light – Bio

Michael Light is a San Francisco-based photographer. His work considers how werepresent and visualise the world around us, exploring the ways that pastarchives and contemporary image culture mediate our relationship to theenvironment.

Light is known for his internationally acclaimed archival works, includingFULL MOON (1999), which was exhibited in its entirety at the Museum ofContemporary Art. For this series, Light gained unprecedented access toNASA's photo archive of the Apollo space missions of 1967-1972. Approachingthese visual documents with an aesthetic sensibility, he painstakingly minedimages taken by the astronauts to present us with the moon as we’ve neverseen before. 100 SUNS (2003), Light’s second major archival series,explores the relationship between politics and landscape, revisiting militaryphotographs of US nuclear detonations during the mid-20th century. In bothcases, Light’s re-presentation of these incredible images asks us to redefineour ideas of visual perception, landscape and the sublime.

Michael Light | American, 1963 -

Michael Light is a San Francisco-based photographer focused on the environment and how contemporary American culture relates to it. He has exhibited globally, and his work has been collected by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Getty Research Institute, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The New York Public Library, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among many others.

For the last fifteen years, Light has aerially photographed over settled and unsettled areas of American space, pursuing themes of mapping, vertigo, human impact on the land, and various aspects of geologic time and the sublime. A private pilot and Guggenheim Fellow in photography, he is currently working on an extended aerial survey of the arid Western states. Radius Books published the first of a multi-volume series of this work, Bingham Mine/Garfield Stack, in 2009. The second, LA Day/LA Night, was released in 2011. The third, Lake Las Vegas/Black Mountain, was published in 2015. The fourth, Lake Lahontan/Lake Bonneville, was released in September 20

Artist Michael Light has made visual books, photographs, and installation about landscape since 1990. LA Day/LA Night, Bingham Mine/Garfield Stack, 100 SUNS, FULL MOON, and Ranch are some of his published work.

Michael Light is a photographer and bookmaker focused on the environment and how contemporary American culture relates to it. A Guggenheim Fellow, his landscape projects have been exhibited globally and his work is in the collections of numerous museums. 22 editions of his seven books have been published worldwide. He is currently working on Some Dry Space: An Inhabited West, an extended, multi-volume aerial survey of arid America.

The fourth volume in the survey, Lake Lahontan/Lake Bonneville, with essays by William L. Fox, Leah Ollman and Charles Hood, has just been published by Radius Books in September 2019.
