Ruth Wyler Messinger (born November 6, 1940)[3] is a former American political leader in New York City and a member of the Democratic Party. She was the Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City in 1997, losing to incumbent mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Biography

Life

Born and raised in New York, Messinger attended the Brearley School. She graduated from Radcliffe College of Harvard University in 1962,[4] and received a Master of Social Work from the University of Oklahoma in 1964. She is married to Andrew Lachman, her second husband, and has three children. She was formerly the President and CEO of American Jewish World Service, an international development agency.[citation needed]

Ruth Messinger served as President of American Jewish World Service, an international human rights and development organization, from 1998 to 2016, and is currently the organization’s inaugural Global Ambassador. Ms. Messinger’s 18-year presidency at AJWS began after a 20-year career in public service in New York City as a city council member and Manhattan Borough President.  Under Ms. Messinger’s leadership, AJWS grew exponentially—granting more than $270 million to promote human rights in the developing world and launching campaigns to end the Darfur genocide, reform international food aid, stop violence against women and LGBT people, end land grabs and respond to natural disasters around the globe. A social change leader and advocate, Ms. Messinger works in the faith-based advocacy arena and is also, now, a social justice consultant, facilitator and instructor with various organizations.  She is married to an educator, has three children, eight grandchildren and two plus great grandchildren.

Ruth Messinger has made the Hebrew phrase, “Tikkun Olam”, repairing the world, the active force of her personal and professional life.

Messinger is, perhaps, best known in New York for the twelve years she spent on the City Council followed by her tenure as Manhattan Borough President from 1990 to 1997. She was a strong advocate for children, public education, campaign finance reform, gay rights, community policing, neighborhoods and small businesses. Today, as Director of the American Jewish World Service, she has extended her “tikkun olam” from metropolitan New York to the rest of the world.

A third generation New Yorker, Ms. Messinger grew up on the Upper West Side, went to the Brearley School, graduated from Radcliffe College and received a master's degree in social work from the University of Oklahoma. She began her social service at the age of 14 when she decided to work at the Settlement House Camp, instead of just putting some of her allowance in the “pushke” (charity box).
