Suleiman Antoine Frangieh (Arabic: سليمان أنطوان فرنجية; born 18 October 1965) is a Lebanese politician. He is the incumbent leader of the Marada Movement,[1] and a former Member of the Lebanese Parliament for the Maronite seat of Zgharta–Zawyie, in North Lebanon. Politically he is considered an ally of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. He was the primary candidate for Hezbollah's faction for the 2022–2025 Lebanese presidential election, before withdrawing.

Suleiman was born in Zgharta, Lebanon on 18 October 1965 into the Frangieh family, a prominent Lebanese political family who claim descent from Franks that settled in Lebanon during the Crusades.[2] He is the son of the late Tony Frangieh, who was assassinated in the Ehden massacre in 1978, and grandson of the former Lebanese President Suleiman Frangieh. Biography[]
Suleiman Frangieh was born on 15 June 1910 near Tripoli, Lebanon to a family of CatholicMaronites. He was an import-export businessman, and he was accused of having killed 700 people during the 1958 Lebanon crisis; he became friends with Hafez al-Assad and Rifaat al-Assad from Syria, allowing for Syria to have some influence in Lebanon. In 1960, he took over his brother Hamid Beik Frangieh's seat in the National Assembly, and in 1970 he won a controversial presidential election with the Kataeb Party after Kamal Jumblatt switched his vote to Frangieh from Elias Sarkis. In 1975, a civil war broke out between the Maronite-majority government and the Palestine Liberation Organization and Amal MovementMuslim rebels. Early life and education
Suleiman Frangieh was a scion of one of the leading Maronite families of Zgharta, near Tripoli; the family's name comes from the Greek Φρὰγκοι (pron. "Frangi"), after the Franks.
Frangieh was born in Zgharta on 15 June 1910.[1] He was the second son of a politician, Kabalan Suleiman Frangieh.[2] His mother was Lamia Raffoul.[3] Kabalan Frangieh was district governor of Ehden (1908–1913) and a member of the Lebanese Parliament (1929–1932).
