Rakhi Birla (born 10 June 1987) is an Indian politician. She has served as Cabinet Minister of Women & Child, Social Welfare and Languages and Deputy Speaker in the Government of Delhi.

Early life and education

She was born in Delhi.[4] She adopted Birla as her surname when her school administration mistakenly wrote Birla instead of Bidhlan in her class 10th certificate.[5] She was the youngest of four daughters. She did Masters in Mass Communication from NBA School Of Mass Communication, New Delhi. Her family was into social causes for four generations, from her great-grandfather and then grandfather who joined the struggle for India's independence.[5][6][7]

Career

She joined a local television channel, Jain TV, as a trainee reporter after completing her education. In total, she had 7 months' experience in journalism with Jain TV.[citation needed]

Bio

Rakhi Bidlan, a journalist- turned- politician is a member of the National Executive of the Aam Aadmi Party. During the Assembly election of 2013, Rakhi won the Mangolpuri constituency by defeating INC’s Raj Kumar Chauhan a four-time MLA by around 10,500 votes.

Rakhi went on to become Minister of Women & Child, Social Welfare and Languages (from December 28, 2013 to February 14, 2014) during AAP’s 49-day short stint in Delhi Assembly. She became the youngest ever cabinet minister in Delhi. One of the most prominent faces of AAP in Delhi, Birla is presently the youngest ever Deputy Speaker of Delhi Legislative Assembly.

Education

After graduating from Delhi University’s Shivaji College, she did her Masters in Mass Communication and worked for a private news channel as a reporter before she joined politics.
