Often, these people have large personalities or an overwhelming presence which bring baggage, often in the form of controversy. Conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli (1946-2001) had a life which was cut much too short, but even so, he lived long enough to triumph over much of the doubt raised by nay-sayers and critics. Needless to say, he was high on my wish list of guests, so when he came to Chicago in September of 1986, we found a brief time to chat. Being educated in several fields, his responses were erudite and sometimes laced with medical or psychological references.
