Well-known figures in most any field are usually outstanding in one area or another.  Often, these people have large personalities or an overwhelming presence which bring baggage, often in the form of controversy.  Conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli (1946-2001) had a life which was cut much too short, but even so, he lived long enough to triumph over much of the doubt raised by nay-sayers and critics.  [For more details and varied opinions about his life, see the biography reproduced at the end of this interview.]

Needless to say, he was high on my wish list of guests, so when he came to Chicago in September of 1986, we found a brief time to chat.  Being educated in several fields, his responses were erudite and sometimes laced with medical or psychological references.  Introspective and thoughtful, he pondered many of my questions and included a sly laugh with a few of his responses.  He was quite pleased with the conversation, and commented at the

Remembering Giuseppe Sinopoli

April 21st 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Giuseppe Sinopoli. He would have been seventy-four – from a generation of conductors that now includes Riccardo’s Muti and Chailly, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Slatkin, Michael Tilson Thomas – and of conductors who have recently died, Maris Jansons and James Levine.
