Larry E. Humes, PhD
The career of Larry Humes has shown a consistent dedication to research that is of the highest caliber and is reflective of the research commitment demonstrated by Dr. Jerger. Beginning with an undergraduate degree from Purdue University and a Master’s degree from Central Michigan, Dr. Humes completed his PhD at Northwestern University in 1979. After spending 8 years at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Humes went to Indiana University and has remained there until today. To say that Dr. Humes has been prolific in publishing important articles in audiology would be an understatement. He has published over 140 journal articles, chapters, book, and reviews and given over 200 presentations throughout the world. The high quality of his research has been recognized and supported by external funding agencies, with over 24 research grants. He was the recipient of an NIH Research Career Development Award from 1984-1989 and has been the Principal Investigator on an individual investigator award from the National Institute on Aging of the National Institute of Health sin

Education
Dr. Humes completed his undergraduate work in 1975 at Purdue University, which was followed by a master's degree from Central Michigan University in 1976, and, finally, a doctorate from Northwestern University in 1979.[2][1]
Career
After an eight-year tenure as a faculty member at Vanderbilt University, he came to Indiana University in 1996.[1] Dr. Humes has publishing over 160 papers[3] and giving over 230 presentations[4] on his research worldwide.[5] Much of his research in recent years has focused on evaluating treatment for speech-perception deficits, age-related changes to auditory perception and outcome measures for hearing aids.[2][1] He serves as a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Acoustical Society of America. CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) – Larry E. Humes, 81, of Urbana passed away surrounded by his family on September 5, 2024, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
He was born on August 20, 1943, in Champaign, Illinois the son of Joseph & Violet (Schumard) Humes. He married Zandra Williams name on July 24, 2001.
Larry is survived by his wife, Zandra; sons- Dale Humes of Loda, IL, Tommy Williams of Springfield, IL; daughters- Besie Williams of Chicago, IL, Erica Shannon of Decatur, IL, Bailey Richards of Champaign, IL; Rachel Hickok of Champaign; brothers- Roger Humes of Urbana; sister- Joyce Lehigh of Urbana; special friend- Kerry Jackson of Armstrong, IL;13 Grandchildren.
He is preceded by his parents; brother- Maynard Humes and sister- June Elaine Humes.
Larry attended Urbana High School and enlisted in the Army. He worked as a bus driver for unit 4 school district & First Student for many years. He also worked for Caradco/Jeldwin as a molder & supervisor. Larry loved hunting & fishing and spending time with his family.
