Prolific music producer thanks New Bedford for the motivation to his success

NEW BEDFORD — He started rapping in Bay Village and is now a Hollywood success. Duane DaRock Ramos says he owes his stellar career to New Bedford for pushing him to pursue his dreams.

“I want to be a motivation to everybody that you can make it,” the Cape Verdean New Bedford native said. “Like there's nothing in the way.”

Ramos, 48, has been part of the music industry for over 30 years. Nicknamed the “Quincy Jones of hip-hop,” he’s worked with top artists such as Big Daddy Kane, Shaquille O’Neal, LL Cool J, Kevin Hart, Nicki Minaj and MC Lyte.

“I want to be an inspiration to New Bedford youth,” he said.

Ramos also co-wrote the hook for the song, “Letter to B.I.G.” for the 2009 feature film, “Notorious” about the story of the late-Christopher Wallace (a.k.a The Notorious B.I.G.), who went from nothing in Brooklyn to stardom in the world of rap music.

Duane "DaRock" Ramos was destined to be a music legend. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Duane "DaRock's" grandfather, Tarnarse Ramos, was a famous upright bass player that performed along with such legends as Duke Ellington. At the age of fifteen, Duane "DaRock" started rapping and performing up and down the east coast.
