Mr. Anand Panyarachun

Mr. Anand was born in Bangkok on 9 August 1932. He is the youngest of twelve children of Phya and Khunying Prichanusat. His early education at Amnuaysilpa school and Bangkok Christian College was followed by his being a boarder at Dulwich College, London.

After completing his B.A. (Hons.) degree in Law from Trinity College, University of Cambridge in 1955, Mr. Anand commenced his distinguished career in the Thai Foreign Service. Highlights of his career included services as Ambassador to Canada, Ambassador to the U.S.A., Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to Germany. Since leaving the Foreign Service in 1979, Mr. Anand has been active in the world of business and international affairs.

Anand Panyarachun is often described as "the best prime minister Thailand never elected" but he has also been called many names over the years.

An ultimate elite, that is commonplace considering his aristocratic family background, education at Dulwich and later Cambridge University in England and stellar career at the topmost echelon of the Thai society.

But to be branded a communist, then royalist? An apologist for the military coup as well as sympathiser of the youth-led pro-democracy progressive movement?

"In my youth, I was a little too brusque. I might have inadvertently encroached upon what should be civil relationship between youth and age. I went beyond the red line at times, not with any ill intention. I knew that I had to adjust. I had to admit that I went too far and that kind of lesson changed my character," Anand recalled.

     Anand Panyarachun was born on 9 August 1932 in Bangkok, the youngest of twelve children of the family of Maha Ammat Tri Phya Prichanusat (Sern Panyarachun) and Khunying Prichanusat (Pruek Chotikasathien).

     Phya Prichanusat received his early education in Thailand and won a King's scholarship after completion of his secondary school education. He was sent to Shrewsbury School in Shropshire, England, after which he entered Manchester University.

     Phya Prichanusat started his career in Thailand's Ministry of Education, where he assumed various teaching roles. He became Headmaster of Vajiravudh College, a school which was modelled after the English public school system. In the course of his career, Phya Prichanusat was apppointed to the highest civil service post, namely Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.
