(1960-    ) US author, born David M Friedman, whose Welsh-sounding name has been legalized. He is perhaps best known for his novella, "The Coon Rolled Down and Ruptured his Larinks, a Squeezed Novel by Mr. Skunk" (August 1990 Asimov's). This is a striking Post-Holocaust tale whose linguistic invention recalls Russell Hoban's Riddley Walker (1980), but which is altogether more graphic in its effects. The Arthur War Lord sequence, comprising Arthur War Lord (1994) and Far Beyond the Wave (1994), is sf with a fantasy coloration. This features the adventures of a man who, via Time Travel convention, chases a female CIA agent into Arthurian times, where she is attempting to assassinate the king, and thus to change history.

Most of ab Hugh's work consists of Ties, including four DoomVideogame ties written in collaboration with Brad Linaweaver and beginning with Knee-Deep in the Dead (1995), which takes its title from the first segment of the original Doom game. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Falle
