Humanizing Heinrich Himmer: Power and Alliances in Transition

Heinrich Himmler was known as Hitler's executioner, the Architect of Genocide, an evil genius, a murderous monster, and der treue Heinrich. But the Reichführer SS, once a sickly child bent on placating and pleasing all of those around him had a great deal of influence during his rise to become one of the most dangerous individuals of the twentieth century. His rivalries formed his political career just as much as his friendships--interestingly enough, the two lines often crossed. This work examines Himmler's rivalries on his rise, and peak of power. However, the newest documentary of Vanessa Lapa, an Israel-based filmmaker, is absolutely not about decency. The title, Der Anständige or The decent one, is in fact an ironic reference to this word that is cited over a thousand times in Himmler’s writings.

2Lapa’s 90-minute film issued from over 700 documents, 300 numbered letters Himmler exchanged with his first wife and his daughter, diaries, various correspondence with his mistress, movies and pictures. It was chosen as the Best Documentary at the 2014 Jerusalem Film Festival and presented in the official selection of many other festivals, including the Berlinale. Lapa’s documentary was screened in New York, Los Angeles, Vienna, Paris, and at Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen.

Important archive material was retrieved from the house of the Himmler family in May 1945. What kind of documents are we talking about? How many? And where are they kept today?

He is primarily known for being a principal architect of the Holocaust.

After serving in a reserve battalion during the First World War without seeing combat, Himmler went on to join the Nazi Party in 1923. In 1925, he joined the SS, a small paramilitary arm of the Nazi Party that served as a bodyguard unit for Adolf Hitler. Subsequently, Himmler rose steadily through the SS's ranks to become Reichsführer-SS by 1929.

Under Himmler's leadership, the SS grew from a 290-man battalion into one of the most powerful institutions within Nazi Germany. Over the course of his career, Himmler acquired a reputation for good organisational skills as well as f
