The painting tradition is strong in Anne Packard's family, from her grandfather Max Bohm, a turn-of-the-century impressionist, to her grandmother, great-aunt, uncle, mother, and daughter.
Anne grew up in New York, the daughter of a prominent medical physician. Although she desired to be an artist, following her family's strong painting tradition, her parents coerced her into going to a secretarial school. After working in the city for a while, she married and raised five children in New Jersey. Anne did not take up painting until the age of 30.
Having always summered in Provincetown, Anne moved there with her children in the 70s. At this time, she began her career as an artist, painting on pieces of driftwood that she sold to passing tourists. Those fortunate enough to have followed Anne's progress since the mid-1970s have witnessed the astonishing evolution of her work.

Anne Packard has one viewer in mind when she paints her misty Provincetown landscapes: her daughter, Cynthia. Cynthia lives across the street from her mother, and although Anne has been painting for nearly 40 years, it's Cynthia who went to Massachusetts College of Art, Cynthia who spends five days a week in her own studio, Cynthia who pushes Anne past her fears as a painter and into the joys of paint.
Now mother and daughter find themselves in an unusual situation: They have concurrent exhibitions at two galleries right across the hall from each other at 129 Newbury St. At Chase Gallery, the walls are filled with Cynthia Packard's nudes. A self-taught artist, initially her art was worked on wood panels and weathered shingles. She studied with the late Phil Malcoat. Anne has painted the Outer Cape, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Mexico for over 30 years. Her grandfather, Max Bohm, was a leading turn of the century impressionist painter, who in 1916 came to Provincetown with many European and American artists. Her grandmother, great-aunt, uncle and mother were also respected painters. The painting tradition runs strong in her family and continues with her children. Listings wanted.
