English businessman, entrepreneur, golf enthusiast, and golf promoter
Samuel Ryder (24 March 1858 – 2 January 1936) was an English businessman, entrepreneur, golf enthusiast, and golf promoter. He originated the idea of selling garden seeds in "penny packets" and built a very successful business on the concept.
At the age of 50 he became an enthusiastic golfer and then from 1923 to 1925 he, together with his brother James, started sponsoring a number of golf tournaments and matches mostly at his home club of Verulam near St Albans. From late 1925 he started employing Abe Mitchell as his private coach. In early 1926 the idea for a match between British and American professional golfers was proposed. Ryder became involved and sponsored the event. It had been his intention that the match would be the first Ryder Cup but it was later decided that the match would not be an official contest. Samuel Ryder
First there is the founder of the Ryder Cup matches, Samuel Ryder. With his business as a seed merchant, he became quite rich, started an enthusiastic interest in golf and its professionals and proceeded to sponsor leading professional tournaments. This led to him nurturing an idea to match the best professional golfers of Great Britain against their American counterparts to encourage goodwill and best sporting endeavour between the two countries. Samuel put up a cup, made by Mappin & Webb and valued at £500, for these international matches which started at Worcester, Massachusetts, USA in 1927.

Samuel Ryder (Walton-le-Dale, 24 marzo1858 – Londra, 2 gennaio1936) è stato un mercante di spezie britannico, appassionato di golf ne sponsorizzò alcuni tornei negli anni venti fra i quali una competizione fra Stati Uniti d'America e Regno Unito che si svolge ininterrottamente da allora ed è chiamata, in suo onore, Ryder Cup.
Primo figlio maschio degli otto figli di Samuel Ryder (1823/4–1904), giardiniere, e di sua moglie Elizabeth il giovane Samuel fu in grado di frequentare l'Owens College a Manchester per diventare insegnante ma non riuscì a completare gli studi a causa della salute cagionevole. Iniziò a lavorare dapprima per una società di spedizioni e più tardi con il padre che nel frattempo si era dedicato al commercio di semenze. In seguito ad alcuni contrasti col padre riguardanti alcune innovazioni proposte abbandonò l'attività di famiglia e si recò a Londra per lavorare per un mercante di semenze.
