Leila started competing in Volleyball at 15.  She switched to Beach Volleyball in July 2001, but returned to the indoor courts in 2003 in a bid to make the Brazilian National team for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.  Leila has ranked among the top indoor players in Brazil.  .  Known and very admired in Asia, Leila played on the Brazilian National team from 1991 through the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. She attempted to make the Brazilian National team for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, but was hampered by leg and ankle injuries.  Leila led Brazil to the bronze medals at both the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.  She was the most valuable player on Brazil�s 1996 and 1998 World Grand Prix gold medal teams.  Leila played her first SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event in 2002 with Sandra Pires.

The Brazil women's national volleyball team is administered by the Confederação Brasileira de Voleibol (CBV) and takes part in international volleyball competitions. It is ranked second in the FIVB World Rankings as of August 2021.[1][2] They are the current record holder of FIVB World Grand Prix champion titles, having won it for the eleventh time in 2016 and are the gold medalists of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The team also got a gold four times in the Pan American Games, and three other Olympic medals, the latest a silver in the 2020 Summer Olympics.[3]

The most successful coaches for Brazil are Bernardo Rezende, who led the team from 1990 to 2000, and José Roberto Guimarães, who has managed the team since 2004.[4]
