The House Band
The House Band was a musical group formed in Edinburgh in 1984 by musicians Ged Foley (vocals, guitar), Jimmy Young (smallpipes, flute, whistle), Iain Macleod (guitar, mandolin) and Chris Parkinson (melodeon, keyboards, piano accordion and harmonica).[1] They played original compositions and traditional music in a Celtic/British folk style, with influences from reggae, country, pop, jazz and world music.[2] Successive regroupings of the band released nine albums over seventeen years, touring in United Kingdom, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the United States,[1] before finally disbanding in 2001.
History
The band's first performance took place in October 1984, at a school in Dalkeith. Its first contract was with Topic Records in London and the first album, The House Band, was recorded in January 1985.

Hermes House Band is a band from Rotterdam. As one of the few Dutch acts they have made it to worldwide fame and this only with appealing cover versions of already existing hits. The band was founded in 1982 as a band of the Rotterdam Student Corps – a student band with a changing line-up. At first they only played at parties in the local area. The band is named after the specific fraternity it comes from, the “Societeit Hermes”.

Once founded as a student band
In 1994, a keyboard player at the time founded her own label to release her cover version of “I Will Survive” on it. Their version of Gloria Gaynor’s 1978 hit became a huge success. At first, it was only released in Holland and Belgium. The cover version was more rhythmic and therefore more danceable. During the time of COVID, three life-long Wichita musicians gambled that they could safely gather, make music, and shed some of the pandemic blues. With most area live-music venues closed or permanently shuttered, the only available gig was the rehearsal space in the guitar player’s basement. Since the practice area greatly resembled a bar and already was referred to as The Rafters, the trio soon began calling themselves “The House Band.”
With no gigs on the horizon, the unwelcomed sheltering did, however, provide one unexpected benefit, the ability to explore musical avenues outside their rock ‘n’ roll and blues comfort zone. So, in addition to material by Taj Mahal, Bobby “Blue” Bland, and Allen Toussaint, “The bands set list quickly grew to included songs made famous by such notables as Bruno Mars, Frank Sinatra and George Gershwin.
Solid musicianship, tight arrangements, and a strong sense of camaraderie are points of pride for the group.
