Mel Tucker enters the 2023 season after an up-and-down start to his tenure at Michigan State. Just a season removed from being one of the hot names in the world of coaching, Tucker is trying to get the Spartans to rebound from a missed bowl game in 2022.

Tucker was originally hired by Michigan State in February of 2020 after Mark Dantonio’s oddly timed retirement. Unfortunately, Tucker did not get much time on the job before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, followed by the shortened 2020 B1G football season.

With a complete offseason, Tucker overhauled the Spartan roster through the transfer portal and added a number of key pieces. That included star running back Kenneth Walker III, who transformed into a Heisman candidate during his lone season with Michigan State.

Mel Tucker has an extensive resume coaching football on the pro and collegiate levels. He is best known for his four-year run as the head coach at Michigan State from 2020-23. In 2021, the Spartans went 11-2 and finished ranked in the top ten in the country. 

 

Tucker was hired at MSU after spending one season at the University of Colorado in 2019 and posting a 5-7 record. Tucker has spent over two decades as an assistant on the pro and college levels before that appointment. 

 

For three years, Tucker was the defensive coordinator at Georgia, helping Kirby Smart make the Bulldogs program nationally elite. He had worked with Smart at Alabama under his old coaching mentor Nick Saban in 2015. 

 

Before re-entering the college game, Tucker was in the NFL for a decade, primarily as a defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears. He even had a five-game run as interim head coach of the Jaguars in 2011, posting a 2-3 record.

Melvin Gene Tucker II[1] (born January 4, 1972) is an American football coach and former player. He was the head football coach at Michigan State University from 2020 to 2023.

Tucker was the interim head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) for the final five games of the 2011 season. He has worked as the defensive backs coach at Ohio State and Alabama and as the defensive coordinator for both the Chicago Bears of the NFL and the University of Georgia.[2][3]

In November 2021, Mel Tucker became one of the highest-paid coaches in college football history, receiving a guaranteed 10-year, $95 million contract from Michigan State, the third-largest contract ever given to a football coach at a public university.[4] In September 2023, following allegations of sexual harassment, Tucker was fired by Michigan State.[5][6]
