Longevity is a hot topic these days but is making it to 100 years of age even desirable if it just equates to more years in pain, riddled with disease, spending most of our waking hours being poked and prodded through treatments? Thanks to the convergence of decades of biomedical and technological advances, soon we’ll be able to live healthier for longer. Whereas lifespan is the number of years we’re alive, healthspan considers the number of years we’re healthy and ailment-free. In this talk, Dr. Eric Topol explores the interplay of the five components of our healthspan extension toolkit—lifestyle, biological “omics” such as genomic sequencing and gut microbiomes, artificial intelligence, drugs and vaccines, and cell-based treatments—and the role each plays in giving us longer, healthier lives. While presenting the scientific breakthroughs that are adding more vibrant years onto our lives, the former anti-aging skeptic breaks down what we know, what remains unknown, and the bumps we’re likely to encounter along the way.

Eric Topol, MD, is a practicing cardiologist with Scripps Clinic and a pioneer in the field of cardiovascular medicine. In his productive career as a physician-scientist, he has built an international reputation for his ground-breaking research and expertise.

Of special interest to Dr. Topol are genomics, wireless sensors, preventive cardiology (including heart attack prevention), coronary artery disease and preventive medicine. The research that Dr. Topol has done on genomic and wireless digital technologies continues to reshape the future of medicine. Despite his in-depth research focus, he continues to see patients at Scripps Clinic, as he believes that research is only as good as what it can do to help others.

Dr. Topol’s philosophy of care is based on the belief that patients should be fully empowered. He ensures this by sharing information completely and building a partnership with his patients. He is also a believer that each patient is unique and therefore requires a specific care plan tailored to their individual needs. He uses the latest innovations in heart care to tr
