Nigerian activist and writer (born 1963)

Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi (born 11 June 1963) is a Nigerian-Britishfeminist activist, policy advocate, social change philanthropy practitioner and writer.[7]

She was first lady of Ekiti State, Nigeria. She is the wife of Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022.[8][9]

Fayemi is the founder of Above Whispers Media Foundation and writes a weekly column called Loud Whispers at the website Abovewhispers.com.[10][11][12] She set up a mentoring program called The Wrapper Network. She was a UN Women Nigeria Senior advisor (2017–2018) and is a Visiting Senior ⁶Research Fellow at the Africa Leadership Center, King's College London.[13][14]

Education

She has a BA (1984) and MA (1988) in history from the University of Ife, now the Obafemi Awolo[8]wo University, Nigeria.[15] She received her MA in Gender and Society (1992) from Middlesex University, UK.[16]

Erelu Bisi Fayemi turned 50 back in June 2013. But it was in her character that she pointedly deferred any celebration of the milestone until much later in further deference to the memory of Ekiti State’s Deputy Governor, Mrs. Funmi Olayinka, who passed away in April, as Mrs. Bisi Fayemi explained to me when I saw her with her husband on the occasion of a lecture being given by Professor Wale Adebanwi at the Oxford University, UK in May.

The marking of the 50th birthday was week-long last week in her Ekiti State with activities that bespoke a kind heart, a compassionate lady, a woman-rights champion, and an intellectual in her own right. I write in tribute to this amazing lady of exemplary attributes.

She previously served as first lady from 2010 to 2014 during her husband's first term in office. In 2001, she co-founded the African Women's Development Fund (AWDF), the first Pan-African grant-making organisation. She serves as a UN Women Nigeria Senior Advisor, and was appointed as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King's College, University of London in 2017.
